Spring Tree Reflections

This lesson has interdisciplinary objectives with math and art. Students in any grade level can produce it, with older students making one as part of a larger math unit. In art, it covers symmetry and printmaking. Also, you may show images from the web of nature reflection.

Materials:
8X16 white paper, pre folded.
Blue watercolor
Pink, brown and green tempera

1. Paint a watercolor background on entire paper. Let dry.

2. Start with the tree trunk. Instruct on how to put on enough paint to make a print. also remind students not to "paint" the trunk too wide, as it will spread out as it is pressed.

3. Fold paper in half before paint dries. The good thing about this procedure is that it can be done again if not dark enough.

4. Apply green blobs on the top for leaves, fold over. Let dry.

5. Apply pink dots of different shades and some white. Fold over. Paint a thin green line across the middle. Fold over.
